Their heads are protected by Corinthian helmets. They are also equipped with spears and protective shields. The warrior in the foreground holds his spear upright in his hand and his protective shield in front of his chest. His upper body is bare and unprotected. The warrior to his left also covers his body with a protective shield. However, he points his spear at the enemy, signaling his readiness to fight. Spartans are prepared from childhood for a life full of violence and war. The policy and training were designed to turn little boys into real warriors. This training that a boy in Sparta had to go through was called agoge. The training already took place at birth, so to speak. After birth, a male baby was examined and it was assessed whether the baby was strong enough to grow into a warrior. If this was not the case, the baby was simply abandoned and left to fend for itself. At just seven years of age, the boys had to leave their parents' home and begin tough training. During the training, the boys were prepared for extreme pain. Another aim was to make the boys more aggressive and ready to fight. At the age of 18, the ultimate test came. The warriors were taken completely naked into enemy territory. Their task was to return to Sparta unharmed. The training did not end until the age of 20. ✔ The position of women On the right side of the motif is a woman. Her long hair is tied in a braid. Women did not fight in Sparta. Their job was to give birth to warriors. Nevertheless, they also had to undergo an education. They were taught to read and write, as well as various sports such as athletics and gymnastics. They had more rights and freedoms than the women in Athens. ✔ Information at a glance The manufacturer is BH Mayer. The denomination is 1 ounce. The year of minting is 2023.
